Clay, a pioneer advocate in Vermont of protective tariffs, he is credited with having introduced into the United States both merino sheep and Holstein cattle. The marriage of Leavitt Hunt to Katherine Jarvis united two wealthy and distinguished Vermont families. Not long after the birth of their son in Glasgow, word reached the young couple that war had broken out between the Northern and Southern States. They made plans for an immediate return to the United States.
